This isn't just another Maralee Fox-Heins fansite although there are
many good ones. Besides paying homage to my favorite tarot deck designer, Maralee Fox-Heins, who has six decks and several
books being published, my hope is to educate you about some alarming things going on in deck creation.
I'm very selective about the decks I buy because there's so many
tarot decks to choose from. I think a deck says alot about the kind of person who buys it, almost as much as who made
it. There are all kinds of decks like throw-away decks, so-so decks, really nice decks and then there are those few which
are called exceptional. The name Maralee Fox-Heins reigns supreme in the select group known as exceptional. She's created
the Lady Eclipse tarot, the Soul Reflections tarot and it's Collector's Edition, the Catch a Falling Star tarot, the online-only
Austin Powers tarot, the Down Under tarot, the Get-A-Head tarot, the Stepping Out tarot, the Retro Cats tarot, the Wired
Up tarot, the Tarot of Wars, and that's naming just a few of her innovative deck creations. Maralee also has more
than three decades of experience under her belt reading the tarot so she knows the tarot like a farmer knows
their crop.
What I think is very disturbing are the so-called 'deck creators' who try to ride on other people's
coattails to success. I don't mean when one person makes the deck and someone else writes the book, that's usually
okay. What I mean is the people who:
#1. Use other's original ideas to make copycat decks.
#2. Those who
'latch on' to someone more well-known so they can get recognition by associating themself with someone famous;this is the
bare bones meaning of "riding on someone's coattails."
#3. Those who get others with some artistic talent to
do most of the designing for the deck and then taking credit for it as if they are the ones who did the work when they didn't.
#4. Those who lie about their tarot credentials by pretending to be
more experienced than they really are.
#5. Those who openly steal the work of others, put their name on it, and
then sell it as if the thief or thieves actually created it.
I'm not certain why anyone would want to do disreputable things
like this but I think it must be because they don't have any original ideas of their own, they can't establish themselves
on their own, they don't have the artistic skills or experience to pull it off by themselves, they are just plain greedy and looking
to make a quick buck, or any combination of these. Whatever the reasons are, all these sneaky people are trying
to get is an unearned position to the top by using cheap shortcuts. I don't like it when a 'deck creator',
and I use that term loosely, does any of these underhanded things. I think it's the same as cheating on a test
and I won't buy a deck from a cheater. Any decks people like this 'create' are the ones that belong in the throw-away
group.
I think it's very important to know whether or not you're buying a
deck from someone who's honest or from someone who isn't. A deck made by a dishonest creator is bound to have
alot of negativity ingrained in it because the person who made it wasn't honest. A deck made by someone trustworthy is going
to be a reliable deck to use because the person who created it was worthy of trust and that's going to be
ingrained in the deck too. Anything someone creates is an extension of them so why would you want to buy something made
by someone who isn't honest? You can't trust a cheater just like you can't trust a gossip. If you buy a deck made by
a cheater, what does that say about you? Now I think you can understand why it's so important to know about the
character of the person who made that deck you're thinking about buying.
The great thing is you don't have to worry
about anything Maralee Fox-Heins creates because she's not a cheater. She doesn't need to ride on anyone's coattails because
she succeeds on her own merits by her using her own original ideas and creating the cards herself. You don't see any
copycat decks from her; all of Maralee's decks are created from her original ideas, not anyone else's. Even her Retro Cats
Tarot is a completely original creation that no other cat tarot can touch. She didn't use anyone's name
to help her get established either; Maralee established herself as an accomplished artist all on her own. She doesn't
take credit for work she didn't do. Maralee doesn't lie about her credentials either, it's obvious from her decks to
her posts at Classic Tarot that she's been reading the tarot since 1973. That's just a few of the reasons why you can
always trust any deck made by her. Can you say the same about the creator of the deck you're thinking about buying? If you
can, that's great, but if you can't, maybe you should be looking at a different deck to buy that's made
by someone with better character.
